Why Custom Boot Jacks Are Perfect Gifts For Him
Boot jacks are an indispensable tool that makes taking off boots and wellingtons much easier without needing to bend over. Not only that, but they’re also great at keeping hands and back clean after being outdoors in mud or snow.
Custom boot jacks are an easy craft that would make a wonderful present for those who spend time outdoors in rugged terrain or working the farm. Crafted from native pine and oak veneer, these quality of life pieces boast a glossy shine that is sure to please.
Boot Jacks Are Crafted From Natural Pinewood With Decorative Cut Overlay
Our boot jacks are handcrafted from native pinewood stained in an eye-catching two toned smoky brown, gray or black color. Some of our boot jacks feature emblems cutout of bucking bronc, horse, deer or coyote silhouette silhouettes carved into the wood which have then been sanded and polished to a high shine.
These sturdy and reliable items make a great addition to any ranch or home. Additionally, they make an ideal present for those who appreciate western style and tradition while simultaneously helping the environment.
You’ll Need: A long hardwood board measuring 17 inches long and 5 inches wide, a table saw equipped with a dado blade, drill with 1 inch diameter hole, screwdriver, sandpaper in various grits.
Step 1. Begin by cutting a dado in one end of the long board that will accommodate the bootjack foot and fork. This groove should be about 3/4-inch deep and 1/4-inch wide. Afterward, cut out the foot (approximately 2 1/4 inches long) from this end.
Next, mark the centers of two holes that will house both your fork and hanging fulcrums. Use a Forstner bit to drill both holes simultaneously, using a backing board to prevent it from splintering when exiting your jack.
Once the excess wood has been carefully removed from both the fork and hanging fulcrum, use a utility knife to carefully scrape away with it. Next, sand them with increasingly finer grits of sandpaper until you achieve your desired smoothness. Finally, finish by using 150 grit sandpaper for final polishing.
Once the sanding is done, use a tack cloth to wipe down the work area and prevent dust from getting onto your boots. Afterwards, assemble the jack by inserting one foot in the dado and the fork into its fulcrum.
It’s essential to remember the fulcrum is the part of the bootjack used to support and raise the heel, enabling it to slide out. Set it slightly higher than the U-shaped end so your foot can hold onto it while pulling out the heel.
Rubber gloves can also be useful to help you hold the fulcrum and support your knees as you pull your boot off. This is especially helpful when working with children or in places where it may not be possible to protect your hands from dirt and grime.
